Mission Statement

The mission of the Kohler Public Library is to provide quality materials and services which fulfill the educational, informational, cultural, and recreational needs to the entire community in an atmosphere that is welcoming, respectful, and businesslike.

Challenges to Selection

The Kohler Public Library understands that materials may be disputed and that patrons may be offended by their selection, however selection will not be affected by the fear of disapproval. The Kohler Public Library endorses the ALA’s Library Bill of Rights and their Freedom to Read Statement, thus, no materials will be marked or held separate on the basis of approval.

Patrons requesting material be removed or restricted within the collection may complete a Statement of Concern About Library Resources Form which will be discussed at the next regular Board meeting.

Circulation Policy

All borrowers must have a valid library card to borrow materials. All library cards expire after four years, but can be renewed upon identification and clearing of any fines. Cards may be replaced with a charge of $2.00 and must be present any time patrons intend to borrow materials or use the internet.

Books will be loaned for 4 weeks with Interlibrary loans due back on the date given by the lending library with books being able to be renewed twice if there is no wait list.

Periodicals are on loan for 1 week except for current issues which do not circulate.

Audio books, discs, and DVDs are able to be loaned for 1 week.

If there is a demand for materials created by student projects, the director has the authority to establish a loan period based on case-by-case factors. Only 2 items on a subject will be allowed in this case.

If materials are returned and judged as unsuitable for the collection, the patron must pay for the replacement.

Young Children

The Kohler Public Library encourages visits by young children and it is our desire to make this important visit both memorable and enjoyable for the child. Library staff is not expected to assume responsibility for the care of unsupervised children in the library.

Therefore, it is library policy that all children under the age of ten must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver who is over the age of fourteen while in the library. Also, if the young child is attending a library program, we require that the parent/responsible person remain in the library throughout the program.

Children who are left alone in the library without supervision or for long periods of time will have a letter containing the library policy sent home with them along with information on the Kohler Kare program.
